Vineyard nutrition in Gracciano
A portion of the vineyards of Gracciano della Seta is caracterized by soils poor in organic matter, poor water retention capacity and complex physical properties. On these soils in very dry seasons, production decreases significantly with direct effects on the quality of the musts.
Here, we intervened to improve the soil's natural fertility, water retention capacity, biodiversity, organic matter content and compaction through manure fertilization.
The cattle manure matured 18 months was purchased from an extensive breeding of Chianina cows from nearby Val d'Orcia
In addition, on the same soil we sowed a green manure seed mixture (Red Oats, Rye, Triticale, Favino, Pea, Clover and Vetch). Green manure brings multiple benefits to the vineyard particularly when done with mixtures of different species.
The vineyard nutrition by combining cattle manure fertilization and green manure enables regeneration of the soil ecosystem. This is the fundamentals of organic and conservative agricolture.
